The Winery
THE SEVEN HALLMARKS OF GORKA IZAGIRRE
1. Origin and location
Opened in 2005 by the Izagirre family, the winery was conceived to enrich Biscay’s wine culture and redefine and develop its txakoli, selling it in the Basque country, Spain and further afield.
Our winery forms part of the Azurmendi complex in Larrabeztu: the perfect place to experience Biscay’s gastronomy in all its splendour.
The characteristics of our vineyards, particularly the steep southeast-facing slopes, allow for gentle morning sun and strategically aerated spaces. This helps to ensure optimal grape ripening and, in turn, premium wine quality.
2. A common goal
Behind each bottle of Gorka Izagirre is the hard work of a team of dedicated professionals who manage each vineyard and oversee the entire production process with a common goal in mind: guaranteeing our wines’ quality and uniqueness.
Bertol Izagirre and his winemaker, José Ramón Calvo, are the driving force behind this project that seeks to recover and redefine Biscay txakoli. Almost two decades since it first opened its doors, the Bodega Gorka Izagirre has sold bottles to clients in more than 15 countries worldwide and won various international awards.
3. A different family
Ours is a diverse family of wines, each conceived to be enjoyed at specific moments. Trust us, you’ll be blown away by their liveliness and freshness.
4. Contemporary tradition
Our winery combines traditional processes such as manual harvesting with cutting-edge technologies to harness the full potential of the grapes. This allows us to make wines with well-defined personalities that convey the very essence of their homeland: Biscay.
5. Indigenous varieties
We at Bodega Gorka Izagirre use grape varieties that only grow in this privileged corner of the Basque Country, such as Hondarrabi Zuri, Hondarrabi Zerratia and Hondarrabi Beltza. The strong character of these grapes lend a unique personality to our wines, allowing them to adapt perfectly to each occasion.
6. Atlantic character
Our vineyards benefit from the unique properties of the local climate. The cool temperatures, constant drizzle and sea breeze that drifts across from the Bay of Biscay give our wines and txakolis nuances that will take you straight to the Atlantic with every sip.
7. Shared passion
We want to share our passion for Biscay’s incredible wines and txakolis with you. What’s more, we want you to form part of their journey. Visit our winery to enjoy wine-based experiences that are bursting with flavour, enjoyment and tradition.
